About Nelson County Historical Society

Our mission: The Nelson County Historical Society exists to discover, preserve, and promote the rich history of Nelson County, Virginia.

  • Monthly historical programs for members and the community March through November each year
  • Guided tours of Oakland Museum on Saturdays and Wednesday afternoons, and by appointment
  • Projects with the Nelson County schools including internships for students, tours of historical locations, and partnerships with teachers to develop and integrate Nelson County history into school curriculum
  • Bi-annual historic homes and properties tour
  • Publication of quarterly newsletter
  • Archiving and preserving family and local history files and primary source collections at Oakland and the Nelson Memorial Library
  • Operation of Oakland Museum store with books and merchandise related to the history of Nelson County 
  • Nelsonhistorical.org website with content on the Society, Nelson County's history, and Oakland Museum
  • Members-only website content includes access to database of the Society's holdings, and in some cases, additional digitized information
  • Responses to genealogy and other research requests related to Nelson County based on Society's holdings
  • Award recognizing the restoration and preservation of an historical Nelson County property
  • Long-range planning for Oakland Museum and exhibits
