On June 27, 2026, Susan McSwain led us through the woods, fields, and waters of times past to discover what we have lost along the way, and what is still around in a presentation at Oakland Museum on Nelson County's Natural History. The link to her presentation is below. It is 47 minutes in length.
Susan has been recognized by several organizations both in Virginia and elsewhere for bringing nature education to others and for her efforts to protect natural resources. In 2014, she was named Volunteer of the Year by the Virginia Master Naturalist state program, and she was the recipient of the Sierra Club Piedmont Chapter Earth Flag Award in 2025.

Beth Massie Goodwin, long time member of the Nelson County Historical Society and Oakland Museum, tells an audience about her upbringing. Her father, "Captain Billy" Massie, owned a well-known store and mill in Tyro, VA. Beth's stories reflect how people lived in a rural area in the mid-20th century.

The Annual Meeting of the Nelson County HIstorical Society was held on Sunday, March 15, at The Nelson Center in Lovingston. After a short business meeting, Archaeologist Randy Lichtenberger made a presentation on findings of an archaeological project at Cabellsville, now Colleen, site of the first courthouse in what became Nelson County.
