The objectives of the Nelson County Historical Society include the authentication, preservation, and acquisition, as feasible, of historical sites and structures in the County.
 
To recognize those stewards of historic properties who have undertaken their preservation, the Society's Board of Directors has authorized an award to be presented annually for the outstanding example of such projects. "Historic" in this case means 50 years or more of age, but not necessarily meeting the full requirements for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Projects can be residential, commercial, or agricultural. The most important factor in assessing projects is the integrity of the site and of the structure itself and how much of the original material has been retained in the structure.
 
Those projects selected will be recognized at the Society's annual meeting.
 
Nominations from any source are welcome from January 1 to February 1 annually for projects completed within the previous three calendar years. Owners may nominate their own projects and projects may be re-nominated in subsequent years. Nominations need only provide contact information for both the nominator and the property owner and can be delivered to the Society by EMAIL or by letter to P.O. Box 474, Lovingston, VA 22949. There are neither fees nor forms to complete, but the Society will appreciate access to any available research regarding the property nominated.
