Research
The Nelson County Historical Society maintains local history research files in the Research Room at the Nelson Memorial Library in Lovingston. Archival collections are housed at Oakland Museum and may be accessed by appointment. Volunteers are available at the Library and at Oakland Museum on Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for onsite help with inquiries. Research requests can be submitted and appointments can be made at info@nelsonhistorical.org or by leaving a message at 434-263-8400. We reply to each inquiry and make every effort to find relevant information for the request.
The Society's local history research files include information on cemeteries, churches, communities, homes, mills, railroads, schools, post offices and general Nelson County government and history. Binders of photographs and obituaries along with family genealogy books are also available.
Due to limited volunteer time, we are not be able to provide research in the Nelson County Courthouse records.
