Tavern Room

Oakland was an “ordinary,” or a tavern, when it was built in 1838. Located on the Old Stage Road, which U.S. 29 roughly follows today, Oakland was about halfway between Charlottesville and Lynchburg. Travelers could stable their horses, enjoy a meal, and sleep over in the original six-room building. The Tavern Room contains a caged bar where beverages were kept, a fireplace and mantel, and other artifacts from the 19th century.
